Grade 4 Unit 7 PBL: Self-Driving Car
The next Big Thing is self-driving cars. Although some already exist, many big car companies are in the research and design stage to make them go mainstream. Within a matter of years, most people could own their own self-driving car! You and your team will work together to design a testing facility for these cars and even use your knowledge of coding to write a script for a car to navigate your facility.
Before You Begin
1. Choose Groups / Seven Habits: Carefully choose your group to work with. All groups must have 2 or 3 students. Before you begin the project, discuss the Seven Habits. How will you use these habits to work together? At the end of this project, you will complete an individual Leadership Self-Assessment about your contributions to the group.
2. Create a Shared Folder: Create a shared folder in Google Drive. Include each partner's name and "Unit 7 PBL" in the title of this folder. Share this folder with each partner AND Ms. Kerley: [email protected] . Make sure each partner and your teacher can "edit" anything in this folder when you share it. Everything for this project must be saved here!
3. View Rubric: View the Rubric for this project. Discuss the expectations for this project with your team.

Research & Design
4. Background Knowledge: What is a self-driving car? Watch at least one of the following videos:
CBS News Report
TED Talk
Google Car
5. Research and Design: Open the Research and Design document. Make a Copy of this document and save it in your shared Unit 7 PBL folder. After completing everything in the Research and Design document, bring it to Ms. Kerley to check and initial before moving on to the next step.

Create
6. Test Facility: Create your Test Facility design on LARGE paper using butcher paper, yard sticks, protractors, and any other materials you would like. Label all angles. Label the length of all lines in CUSTOMARY AND METRIC units.
7. Write Scripts: Using your knowledge of coding, write two scrips showing how a Sphero would navigate your paper test facility. One script should include customary units, the other should include metric units.
8. WOW Factor: How will you go above and beyond in this project? Do not limit yourself to just one idea!
Ideas:
~Program a Sphero to successfully navigate your test facility using MacroLab
~Design a self-driving car using Tinkercad
~Create a commercial convincing your viewers to buy a self-driving car
~Or come up with your own WOW factor idea!
Present and Reflect
9. Presentation: Come up with a CREATIVE way to present what you worked on in this project. You must mention something about measurement (yard/meter sticks, protractors, customary/metric units, etc.) Other than that, be creative! Find a way to make your presentation interactive and engaging!
10. Group Project Assessment Rubric: Make a copy of the Group Project Assessment Rubric and save it to your Unit 7 PBL folder. Write an explanation for the number of points you deserve in each category to determine your grade on this Project.
11. Leadership Self-Assessment: Make a copy of the Leadership Self-Assessment for each person in your your group and save them to your Unit 7 PBL folder. Make sure you retitle each one to include the name the group member completing the self-assessment.
