GA Habitats PBL Unit
Zoo Atlanta is opening up a second zoo in Johns Creek that features plants and animals found in Georgia and they need your help! The project manager knows some of the plants and animals that will be arriving, but doesn't know which of the 5 zoo habitats they belong in. They need your help organizing the plants and animals into their exhibits and making sure they have what they need to survive!
Before You Begin
1. Group - Discuss expectations with your team about what it takes to be a great group member. Each group member will fill out the Leadership Self-Assessment at the END of this project.
2. Preview Project - Read over project instructions and plan ahead.
Research
3. Research Habitats - Use the textbook, minibooks, and this powerpoint (click orange link) to research the 5 georgia habitats: mountain, piedmont, coastal plain, swamp/marsh, and Atlantic Ocean. Include notes in your science notebook about each one.
4. Research Plants and Animals - Check out the plants and animals (click orange link) that will be delivered to the Georgia Habitat Zoo in the next few weeks. Which of the habitats can they live in? Do any live in more than one? Find an additional plant and animal that can live in each of the habitats. Categorize these plants and animals into their habitats in your science notebook.
5. Design - Design a Georgia Habitats Zoo in your science notebook. It must include all 5 habitats, and list the plants and animals that live in each.
6. Teacher Conference - Meet with your teacher and show her your design. Be ready to explain why each plant and animal can survive in its habitat. Can any be found in more than one habitat?
CREATE
7. Create - Create your Georgia Habitat Zoo on large poster paper (use your design from your science notebook). Include the following:
8. WOW Factor - How will your group go above and beyond? It's your choice! Here are some ideas:
Reflect
9. Present - Present your Georgia Habitats Zoo and WOW Factor with group of students. Due dates will be discussed in class, written in your agenda, and shared on Google Classroom.
10. Reflect - Each student will reflect on how well they collaborated with their group members using the Leadership Self-Assessment.

7. Create - Create your Georgia Habitat Zoo on large poster paper (use your design from your science notebook). Include the following:
- Name and description of each habitat.
- A map of where each habitat is located in the state of Georiga.
- Name and drawing of plants and animals that live in each habitat.
- Include pictures of and label nonliving things found in each habitat.
- Explain how at least one plant or animal from each habitat has adapted to live there.
8. WOW Factor - How will your group go above and beyond? It's your choice! Here are some ideas:
- Create a 3D model of each habitat in shoe boxes - include plants and animals.
- Create a commercial or advertisement for your zoo.
- Create your own Georgia Habitat rap that could be played at your zoo!
- Interview someone who works with animals (like a vet) about how animals adapt to survive in their habitat.

- Write a narrative story about what it would be like to visit your zoo.
- Come up with your own idea!
