Grade 5 Unit 3 PBL: College Apartment
Congratulations! You worked really hard in school and have been accepted into the college of your dreams. Now you and your roommate need to go shopping for furniture for your first college apartment!
Before You Begin
1. Choose Groups / Seven Habits: Carefully choose your group to work with. All groups must have 2 or 3 students. Before you begin the project, discuss the Seven Habits. How will you use these habits to work together? At the end of this project, you will complete an individual Leadership Self-Assessment about your contributions to the group.
2. Create Shared Folder: Create a folder in your Google Drive that has the names of the people in your group and "Unit 3 PBL". Share with everyone in your group and with Ms. Kerley ([email protected]). All documents you create for your project should be saved in this folder!
3. View Rubric / Begin with the End in Mind: Click here to see the project planning and rubric sheet. Do not begin working on the project until you have discussed all of the project requirements with your group members. Notice that there is a WOW factor on the rubric. What can your group do to go above and beyond the requirements?

4. Copy Planning Sheet to Folder: Open the link for the Planning Sheet (click "File-Make a Copy" so you can edit your own copy and save in your shared folder).
5. Brainstorm, Research, and Shop: Use the planning sheet to brainstorm, research, and shop for the items for your college apartment. CHALLENGE: Which roommates can finance a quality apartment for the best price?
6. Teacher Conference 1 and 2: During the planning stage, you will conference with your teacher at least two times. She will initial your plan when you are ready to move on.

Apartment Design
7. Guest Interview Opportunity: Interview a college student about their dorm or apartment. Have them measure their rooms and furniture to help you before you design your own.
8. Design Apartment: Design your college apartment on Google Drawings or on paper TO SCALE. You may research apartment layouts to help you. Include all measurements in customary units and include a key that shows how you know it is to scale (does 1 foot in real life = 1 inch in your drawing?) Show where all of the items you purchased will go. Include a link to or a photo of your drawing on your planning sheet.

10. Wow Factor: After completing all requirements, what else can you do for your WOW factor?

- Create a 3D model of your apartment.
- Interview an interior decorator about the process he or she uses to furnish a space.
- Find an actual apartment for sale in the city of the college of your dreams. Use this to model your apartment after.
- Meet with a financial adviser to discuss how you could save enough money for your purchases by the time you enter college.
- Create a video using green screen technology of you in your furnished apartment.
- What ELSE can you do to go above and beyond???

12. Present: You will present your Item Calculations and Apartment Drawing to another group of students. They will critique your work and give you suggestions for finishing touches.

You and your group members will fill this out TOGETHER. Please use complete sentences to evaluate your work. Be specific about your work. Show how many points you deserve for each category, then calculate the grade you think you deserve. (The teacher will grade your website separately, but will look at what you wrote for input. Dishonest feedback about your project will NOT help your grade.)
